Concrete driveway replacement in Cheyenne

When cracks, scaling or sunken slabs have gone past patching, replace the driveway and fix what failed underneath.

Driveway replacement means breaking out the old concrete, correcting the base, and pouring a new slab. If your Cheyenne-area driveway is broken up, flaking or holding water, we connect you with an independent concrete contractor who can tell you whether replacement is the right call and handle the tear-out and repour.

When does replacement make sense?

  • Cracks running across many panels, with pieces shifting
  • Surface scaling or flaking over large areas
  • Panels sunk or tipped toward the garage or house
  • Ponding water that freezes into ice sheets
  • Heaved sections where the base has failed
  • An old, thin slab cracking under newer, heavier vehicles

One or two cracked panels can often be cut out and replaced on their own. When most panels have problems, a full replacement is usually cleaner and lasts longer.

Why do Cheyenne driveways wear out?

Scaling is the most common complaint in a freeze-thaw climate. The Concrete in Practice sheet on scaling lists the usual causes: concrete with little or no entrained air, finishing while bleed water is still on the surface, poor curing, and heavy deicing salt on weak concrete. Cheyenne's long freezing season, which normally runs from late September to mid-May, gives those weaknesses plenty of chances to show. Cracking and settling usually trace back to the base: soft or poorly compacted soil, water getting under the slab, or soils that swell and shrink with moisture.

What a replacement involves

  1. Saw-cutting at the edges so the new slab meets the garage, walk and approach cleanly
  2. Breaking out and hauling away the old concrete
  3. Removing soft material, adding and compacting base
  4. Forming, with slope set away from the house and garage
  5. Pouring an air-entrained mix, finishing, jointing and curing

If the approach or the sidewalk in the right-of-way is being replaced too, that part needs a City of Cheyenne right-of-way encroachment permit and has to meet the city and Board of Public Utilities construction specifications.

What changes the cost?

  • Size and thickness of the old slab, and disposal
  • How much base needs to be removed and replaced
  • Whether the approach, curb or sidewalk are included
  • Finish, color and any widening at the same time

Common questions

Can a scaled driveway be resurfaced instead of replaced?

Sometimes, if the slab underneath is sound and only the top is flaking. Overlays depend on good bond and can fail on weak or cracked concrete. A contractor can tell you after looking.

Will the new driveway match my garage floor height?

The contractor saw-cuts and forms the new slab to meet the garage, walks and street at the right heights, with slope away from the house.

Do I need a permit to replace my driveway approach?

Work in the public right-of-way in Cheyenne needs a right-of-way encroachment permit, and the city requires a contractor with a city license to cover the work.
